Fiberoptic-coupled argon laser in the control of experimentally produced gastric bleeding
An argon laser beam, guided by conventional fiberoptic endoscopy, was delivered to mechanically produced bleeding ulcers of the canine stomach. Bleeding ceased promptly following laser-photocoagulation. Histologic examination of photocoagulated ulcers indicated that morphologic alterations induced by laser irradiation were limited to the target area and did not extend to the muscularis propria or serosa. Sites of photocoagulated ulcers examined 3 weeks post-irradiation showed no gross evidence of the lesion, but microscopically these sites showed reparative changes.
