Patency capsule (PC) is a frequent initial study in patients with a perceived risk
of retained study video capsule endoscopy (VCE). PC has no video capabilities, is
the exact dimensions of the VCE but, starts to disintegrate at 30 hours if still present
in the body. Its use involves abdominal xray (KUB) performed 24 and/ or 30 hours post
PC ingestion. If there is evidence that PC has traversed the small bowel a VCE is
then performed.
