There are 3 types of self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) available for the palliation
of malignant biliary obstruction: uncovered (ucSEMS), partially covered (pcSEMS),
and fully covered (fcSEMS). Both ucSEMS and pcSEMS were developed for palliation but
are prone to tumor ingrowth. Subsequently, fcSEMS were developed to prevent tumor
ingrowth but may be more susceptible to migration.
