The reduced incidence and mortality from colorectal cancer over the past 30 years
is largely attributable colonoscopy and polypectomy. However, success of colonoscopy
depends on finding and removing all precancerous polyps. Clear visualization of the
colonic mucosa is a prerequisite and depends on preparation quality. Multiple studies
have shown that splitting the dose of bowel prep prior to colonoscopy significantly
improves prep quality. Additional studies have shown that prep quality improves polyp
and adenoma detection rates (PDR and ADR). Yet, only one retrospective study has shown
that split dose preparations are associated with improved PDR and ADR (excluding sessile
serrated polyp detection rates [SSPDR]). We therefore, analyzed our colonoscopy quality
database for associations of single-dose vs split-dose preparation and PDR, ADR SSPDR,
number of polyps per procedure (PPP), number of adenomas per procedure (APP) and number
of SSPs per procedure (SPP).
