58 The Readability of Common Gastrointestinal Procedures

      According to the CDC, approximately 15 million colonoscopies were done for colorectal cancer screening in 2012 in the USA. Due to the Internet’s ubiquity and ease of access, patients are taking to online resources to understand medical procedures. The National Institutes of Health recommends that the readability level of such patient education materials (PEM) be at or below the 6th grade to be understood by the average American. Here, we analyze on the readability of online PEM for colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD).
