Endoscopy has evolved rapidly in the past decades because of significant increases
in the number of endoscopy units, development of specific tools and accessories, ease
of access (eg, open-access endoscopy), and high-quality prospective data showing good
long-term patient-oriented outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and feasibility. Concomitantly,
leaders of the scientific community have continuously pushed the envelope and expanded
the indications and possibilities of digestive endoscopy. Where therapy is concerned,
the development of innovative techniques is driven by a superior risk-to-benefit profile
when compared with the more invasive classic approaches (eg, surgery). For a new technique
to be widely adopted, it needs to fulfill certain criteria, such as time-tested proof
of desirable outcome, availability of instruments, and stakeholder endorsement.
